The purpose of this cross-sectional study of 494 nurses (mean age 27.5 years old) in a general hospital in central Taiwan was to explore the knowledge of, the attitude towards and the willingness of nurses to participate in hospice care. Data was collected by self-administered questionnaire. We found the following. The nurses scored 6.5 out of 8.0 points in knowledge about hospice care and 11.6 out of 12.0 in attitude toward it. While they generally had a positive attitude toward it, only 42.9% were willing to participate in hospice care. The extent of their knowledge about hospice care depended on whether they had previously attended an ethical course and their attitude towards hospice care was governed by their religious beliefs. Their willingness to participate in hospice care depended on their religion, their experiences as a volunteer and whether they had attended an ethics course or not. The study indicated that nurses' knowledge of hospice care was insufficient and that the willingness to participate in hospice care was low. We conclude that nurses in general hospitals be provided in-service training on hospice care.
