Purpose: In the past ten years, Bartonellosis was recognized as a kind of important diseases, called emerging anthropozoonoses, through the world. Hence the aim of this study is to study and understand the condition of emerging infectious disease in Taiwan. Recently, some studies have identified the pathogens of these infectious diseases which were associated with Bartonella spp., such as B. bacilliformis induced Carrion's disease, B. quintana induced trench fever and B. henselae induced cat-scratch fever. Method: In this study fifty blood samples collected from stray cats which were caught in the traditional market located in Taichung, Yunlin and Changhua for epidemiological investigation. These samples were detected by indirect fluorescent method for positive reaction and chocolate-based incubation for bacteremia. Results: The results indicated the prevalence of positive reaction was 60% (30/50) and the prevalence of bacteremia was 22% (11/50). In addition, B. henselae was identified in these infectious cases and there were positive correlation between young kitten, cat-flea infestation, and stray cats. Conclusion: In Taiwan at least in central area of Taiwan we identified B. henselae in stray cats and may become an important zoonotic infectious disease in the future in Taiwan. Hence we strongly suggested a massive investigation about this emerging infectious disease is needed in the near future.
