Abstract: Prevention of asthma occurrence and exacerbation requires attention to indoor and outdoor air pollution. The aim of this paper is to describe common asthma-related pollutants in Taiwan, including nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, ozone, particulate matter, formaldehyde and environmental tobacco smoke, and to provide recommendations for reducing exposure to these pollutants. Such recommendations include staying indoors, keeping windows and doors closed, and using air purifiers or high-efficiency particulate arrestor air filters. Prohibition of smoking in indoor spaces can reduce the levels of indoor air pollutants. Individuals with asthma should also avoid exertion outdoors when the levels of outdoor air pollutants are high.
