Abstract: In April, 1984 fecal materials of 3,023 school children (1,480 males and 1,543 females) from three townships (Hsia-Ying, Liu0Ying and Yen-Sui) of Tainan Hsien, southern Taiwan, were examined with antiformin-enter concentration. The positive rate of Fasciolopsis buski eggs was 7.5%; the rate for male, 7.7% and for female, 7.3%. Out of the three townships, Fasciolopsis buski eggs were only found in children living in Hsia-Ying township, with an infection rate of 10.5% (junior high school 7.3% and primary school 11.6%). Among 15 villages in Hsia-Ying township, Mao-Kang village had the highest infection rate (45.9%). Chung-Ying primary school was found to have the highest prevalence rate (25.1%) among the seven schools examined. Seven years old children had the highest infection rate of all (227 infected children). The infection rate of the children seems to be related to the eating of raw water caltrops and the families who cultivate water caltrops. One hundred and fifteen children were treated either with mebendazole (100 mg, 2 times/day for 3 days) or with albendazole (200 mg, 2 times/day, for 3 days). The anthelmintic efficacies of both drugs proved to be unsatisfactory.
