The current project is conducted to analyze the biological samples obtained in the adult participants, aged 19 years and older, in Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan 2004-2008 to assess nutrition status of the subjects. Blood/urine samples collected from subjects who participate in the survey questionnaire interview session and in the physical examination were analyzed for biochemical indicators of sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and iron as well as of folate, vitamin B12, and plasma concentration of homocysteine, an important indicator related to several cardiovascular diseases. According to the coefficients of variation (CVs), the quality of analysis is fair in general. The results showed that the subjects appeared to have adequate levels of vitamin B12. The prevalence of low serum 25(OH)D (<9 ng//mL) is relatively low as well (3.5% and 4.3% for males and females, respectively). About 37.5% of males and 18.5% of females have low serum concentration of folate (“deficient” or “borderline deficient”), and the percentages of borderline deficiency appeared to be higher than those observed in previous surveys. In addition, 56.5% of males and 37.1% of the females have plasma concentrations of homocysteine higher than 12 mol/L. In the near future, the biochemical indicators analyzed in the current project will be merged with other survey data, and will be released simultaneously to researchers for further studying in nutrition-related issues for better understanding of the relationships between biochemical indicators and dietary intake, and the relation of nutrient status to certain common diseases such as obesity, diatebes, and cardiovascular diseases, and thus to provide information on the problems of nutrient imbalance as well as the trend of change in nutrient status in our people for future planning of dietary/nutrition policies or modification in dietary intake recommendation.
