This article describes a nursing experience helping a young Vietnamese primipara woman develop attachment to her premature infant. From October 15 to November 10 in 2006, we gathered data repeatedly by observations and interviews. We then used Roy's model to evaluate her needs. She was not found to have the resources needed to related to her baby and did not have enough experience or ability to take care of a newborn or seek assistance. Access to assistance has limited greatly by her being a foreign national with not only language barriers but also differences in cultural norms and concepts. She had three major health problems: attachment to infant, health-seeking behavior, and knowledge of how to nourish a premature infant. Nurses played various roles, including supporter, adviser, counselor and coordinator in solving her problems depending on time and need. Nurses also encouraged her to use the Kangaroo technique for premature infants and coached her on how to establish a good mother-infant attachment. This successful experience can serve as a good example for nurses who need to provide assistance to similar cases.
