his case report describes the care of a preschool boy infected with an enterovirus. He presented oral pain on the day he visited our emergency room. He was highly suspected of being infected an enterovirus, and admitted for further observation and treatment During his hospitalization, which was from June 6 to 14, 2005, we used Gordon 11 functional health patterns to assess the child's physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs. Data were collected by both interview and observation. Four health problems were noted: (1) knowledge deficit due to the child's mother being unacquainted with enterovirus infection information, (2) pain due to oral ulcers caused by enterovirus, (3) hyperthermia due to enterovirus infection, and (4) headache due to cranial neuron syndrome and anxiety. The primary nurse educated his mother about enterovirus infection, performed oral care, diet instruction, and fever management to increase his comfort. Nurses also intervened to prevent intracranial pressure increase, and established professional relationship to decrease his anxiety and his mother's restlessness. The nursing care experience described herein should encourage nurses to identify the needs of pre-school children infected with enterovirus and improve their quality of care.
