This study evaluated effectiveness of prenatal education and peer support on the well-being of pregnant women who received assisted reproduction treatment. From December 2000 to February 2002, we conducted a quasi-experimental study using purposive sampling to collect data from an infertility treatment center in central Taiwan. Nursing intervention with prenatal education and peer group support were provided during first or second trimester to an experimental group of 28 women for 90 minutes per week for 4 weeks. Measurements were obtained before and after one month of prenatal education. Within the control group were 30 women who did not receive prenatal education. Measurements were obtained before and after one month without instruction. Results indicated that experimental group participants had higher levels of pregnancy acceptance, better relationships with their mothers and higher total well-being scores than control group participants. However, experimental group participants scored lower than control subjects on relationships with their husbands. These findings regarding the effectiveness of prenatal education and a peer support can provide nurses with more understanding regarding the well-being and interpersonal relationships experienced by patients receiving assisted reproduction treatment.
