This study conducts a 3-year longitudinal study to clarify the influences of acculturation and self-perceived discrimination on mental health among immigrant women in Taichung City, Changhua County, and Nantou County. The mediational role of immigrant women’s depressive status between self-perceived discrimination and children’s behavioral problems is examined as well. Participants are recruited through public elementary schools in which all 10th graders with an immigrant mother are invited to complete a series of questionnaires concerning self-perceived discrimination, behavioral problems, family functioning, parental bonding, and demographic variables in class. Their immigrant mothers are also invited to fill out questionnaires regarding self-perceived discrimination, acculturation, children’s behavioral problems, and depressive symptoms at home. A cohort with around 790 mother-child pairs are therefore established and followed-up for 3 years. Repeated measurement method is used to construct multiple regression models. The mediational effect of immigrant women’s depressive status between self-perceived discrimination and children’s behavioral problems is tested by Sobel test. In addition to clarify the relationships between acculturation, self-discrimination, depressive symptoms in immigrant women, and behavioral problems in children of immigrant women, we hope that the model that established from this study can provide helpful information in making effective and preventive strategies for mental health of immigrant population in Taiwan in the future.
